Movie Review - The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption (Film) - TV Tropes

The Shawshank Redemption is an American movie premiered in 1994 and directed by Frank Darabont - this movie indicates an intelligent man who was sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murders of his wife and her lover, despite his claims of innocence. During his time in prison, he met Ellis "Red" Radding the famous smuggler in the prison and they became friends ever since. Andy (the killer) worked at the prison laundry and he usually been sexually harassed by few men called "Sisters". The acceptance of living in a prison makes his life worst due to that he tried to escape by crawling into a tunnel and escaped - after 40 years of imprisonment Red met his long lost friend and reunited back again after all the things have happened in their lives.

The director of this film, Frank Darabont was born on January 28, 1959, and he is Hungarian-American. He is a film director, screenwriter, and producer and got his education at Hollywood Highschool. He has been nominated for three Academic Awards and a Golden Globe Award for his success in making the best quality of films. Besides, in the early career of his journey as a film director, some of his movies were A Nightmare on Elm Street, Blob, and The Fly. The Shawshank Redemption is an adaptation of a novel from Stephen Hawking and he decided to make it into a film. His achievement in this movie has received a lot of positive impacts when the film was nominated for seven Academic Awards including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and most rented film in 1995. His achievement in this movie made into a success which considered by the audience one of the greatest movies ever made.

In this movie, personal favorite shots, and scenes were vary but based on the Mise-En-Scene in this movie there were some shots that made this movie one of the greatest movies ever made.

This mid-range shot emphasizes the facial expression of the actor in the film, where he was convicted as a murderer of killing his wife and his lover. The shot was taken to particularly telling the audience the actor's feelings and to express the message in the film so does to the audience.

A close-up shot was used in this film to indicate the actions done by the actor when he wanted to kill his wife showing what he was doing with the gun and he was about to do with it. It emphasizes the actions that are done and the consequences of what will happen next in the film.

Aerial-view shots were implemented to show the variety of angles and views in the film. These two shots predominantly showing the environment of the scenes and how it took part in the film.

These two shots have different perspectives of shots whereas Rule-of-Third and Mid-range shot were done in this movie. The first picture where the actor got into his cell during his first day of imprisonment - by using the mid-range shot and adjustments of lighting to make it even more real how devastated he was during his first time in prison.

The second picture indicates Rule-of-Third where the actor was arguing and he had the nerve to have a fight with one of the wardens in prison. As you can see, the adjustment of balancing the actors in front and on the side to make the scene more stagnant and surreal.

All in all, this movie has taught us many things in particular where you have to admit what you have done wrong towards people and you have to make sure that whatever you do in your life the consequences await you in the future. Although the most impact in this film is the quality of friendship that they have throughout the years of parole in prison, they always and will have each other's backs no matter what happens. The values in this film have more impact on moral life values which indicates the meaning of true life.
